A road was resurfaced by mistake in the municipality of Ilmajoki in South Ostrobothnia, Yle reports.
The contractor noticed the error after milling the old asphalt and contacted the municipality. The work was completed at a slightly reduced contract price.
The unexpected improvement covered just over 350 metres of Ojanperäntie, near the town centre. The municipality’s technical committee decided to cover the approximately 30,000 euro cost from funds allocated for improving traffic safety.
This means the additional expense will not put other already agreed resurfacing projects at risk.
The municipality said the mistake resulted from several unfortunate coincidences, including a change to the road’s name. According to municipal engineering manager Petri Hakamaa, this was apparently the first mistake of its kind in Ilmajoki.
The resurfacing work on Ojanperäntie will be completed this autumn.
