Man charged with repeated sexual offences against foster child

A man has been charged with aggravated violations in an intimate relationship, rape and sexual offences against a 12-year-old girl who was temporarily staying in foster care at his home, mbl.is reports.

The indictment says the accused was married to the girl’s foster parent. He is alleged to have given the girl medication that caused drowsiness and left her unable to resist.

According to the indictment, he had intercourse and other sexual contact with the girl several times between April and early May at the home they shared. It says he exploited his advantage and age difference, as well as the girl’s inability to resist or understand the significance of the acts because of her age and, in some instances, the effects of the medication.

The detention ruling states that the alleged offences included the man penetrating the girl’s vagina and mouth on several occasions. It also says he gave her alcohol to drink with him.

The girl’s foster mother, who is the accused’s wife, was not at home when the alleged offences took place, according to the ruling.

The man was arrested on 11 May, when police searched his home. Medication was seized, including an emergency contraceptive pill. The ruling says the packaging showed that some of the medication had been used.

He has remained in custody and is subject to a restraining order against the alleged victim. One of the girl’s parents is seeking five million Icelandic krónur in compensation on her behalf.

The case is being heard at Reykjanes District Court, with the main hearing scheduled for the end of September.
