Passenger ferry carrying 270 people sinks off northern Cyprus

A passenger ferry carrying around 270 people has capsized off northern Cyprus, according to Cypriot media, SVT reports. A search and rescue operation is under way.

The accident occurred shortly after the ferry left the Cypriot city of Kyrenia, about two kilometres from the coast, according to Cyprus Mail.

The Turkish Cypriot coast guard has sent boats and a helicopter to the scene.

Videos published by Cyprus Mail show the ferry almost completely submerged.
