Danish food agency says refrigerated eggs can last two months

Eggs stored in refrigerators in Denmark can often remain safe to eat for up to two months, and possibly longer, after the date printed on the package, DR reports. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration says there is no need to throw them away solely because they have passed that date.

Charlotte Kølln, a section manager at the agency, said the stated shelf life applies across the European Union and is based on the fact that eggs in most other EU countries are not refrigerated.

In Denmark, eggs are kept refrigerated both in supermarkets and at home, which means they can last considerably longer than the package date suggests, Kølln said.

How to check an egg

Consumers should still assess the eggs before eating them. After cracking one open, they can check whether the yolk is firm and round and smell the egg for signs of spoilage.

The smell of a rotten egg is usually easy to recognise, Kølln said.
