Finland falls to 24th in OECD vitality ranking

Finland’s vitality has barely improved in 15 years, according to an EVPY index developed by consultancy MDI and reported by Yle. Fifteen OECD countries have overtaken Finland on the index’s vitality measure since 2010.

Finland ranks sixth among 38 OECD countries when all the index’s categories are included. In the vitality category alone, however, it has fallen from ninth place to 24th.

“Sixth place is good, but falling behind in vitality may eventually have a negative impact on Finland’s strong areas,” MDI expert Risto Heikkinen said in a statement.

The index measures vitality using indicators including business-sector spending on research and development, gross national income and the employment rate.

Funded by Sitra, the EVPY index examines how attractive OECD countries are as places to work and live. It covers vitality, attractiveness and retention, and societal sustainability, using 22 indicators over the period from 2010 to 2024.
