Faxaflóahafnir plans to build new headquarters at Sundahöfn, according to mbl.is, and has opened prequalification for a closed competition to design the building.

The new Hafnarhús is planned for the north end of Skarfabakki by Viðeyjarsund, with Viðey across the strait. The building is expected to cover about 3,000 square metres and house the port authority’s office and service operations in one location.

Faxaflóahafnir currently operates from Hafnarhúsið on Tryggvagata and Bækistöðin on Fiskislóð in Grandi. The new headquarters will be located near the Vör passenger centre and the organisation’s tugboat fleet.

The port authority said the area would become its new home base, close to the centre of its harbour operations and well placed to support services across all of its operating areas.

The prequalification covers the building’s full design, including architectural, engineering and site design. Up to five teams will be selected to take part in the subsequent closed design competition.

Prequalification documents became available through the electronic Ajour tender system on August 20. The application deadline is 2pm on October 1, 2026.
