Finland, media, rescue services

The Association of Editors-in-Chief has appealed to Finland’s Ministry of the Interior to extend the publication of initial rescue service bulletins, Yle reported.

The current system is due to be discontinued at the beginning of September, and no replacement system will be available immediately.

The association said this could create a gap between early September and late autumn during which rescue departments’ operations would not be reported systematically. It warned that this could undermine the implementation of the public access law and create room for disinformation.

The new system planned for October would not, in the association’s assessment, serve the media and the public quickly, accurately and equally enough.

The association is calling for the current system to remain in use until a replacement is operational.
