Finland’s largest solar farm is now generating electricity for the grid in Kalanti, Uusikaupunki, Yle reports. Final-stage testing is still under way, according to Petri Polvilampi, a senior project manager at electricity company Helen.
The 200-hectare solar power plant has 360,000 panels. Its output of 206 megawatts is equivalent to the electricity needs of more than 20,000 households.
Construction began three years ago, but the project was significantly delayed. The plant was originally scheduled for completion in summer 2025.
Polvilampi told Yle last autumn that the plant’s problems and slow completion were largely caused by its size.
Helen also operates two previously completed solar farms, but both are considerably smaller than the Kalanti plant. The facility in Lohja has an output of 8.5 megawatts, while the one in Nurmijärvi has an output of 1.5 megawatts.
Finland’s western coast, particularly the regions of Southwest Finland and Satakunta, is attracting companies building solar power plants.
