Kringvarp Føroya reports that police want to record which Faroese resident is assigned each internet IP address and store the information for one year.
This would help investigators uncover online crimes where the only information available is an IP address, said Katrin Thorsvig Hansen, the police chief prosecutor.
She stressed that the system would not record what people do online. IP address information would only show who owns the router connected to the internet.
Cafés, restaurants, public institutions and many other places share internet access. In such cases, identifying the IP address owner would be the police’s first step in an investigation.
