Copenhagen Pride increases security for 30th anniversary parade

Thousands of people are gathering in Copenhagen today for the annual Copenhagen Pride parade, with extra security measures in place following a terror attack at Berlin Pride three weeks ago, DR reports.

The event marks Copenhagen Pride’s 30th anniversary and celebrates the right to be who you are. Security has been given particular attention because of the Berlin attack.

“We have a major task together with Copenhagen Police to make our guests feel safe,” said Benjamin Hansen, chairperson of Copenhagen Pride.

Hansen said safety was a high priority because the organisers wanted as many people as possible to attend the events and parade in support of the cause.

Copenhagen Police Inspector Lars-Ole Karlsen said police planning was based on the current threat assessment from PET and took developments around them into account.

Police will have a visible presence at locations where large numbers of people gather. All access roads to the parade will also be blocked with large trucks while it is under way.

The parade starts at 1 p.m. at Frederiksberg Town Hall, travels through the city and ends at Copenhagen City Hall Square, known as Pride Square during Pride Week.
