Icelandic National Holiday weekend concludes with successful festivals despite weather challenges
The Icelandic National Holiday weekend has officially concluded, with many attendees heading home today. Organizers from four major festivals reported satisfaction despite facing challenges due to varying weather conditions across regions.
In the Westmann Islands, Jónas Guðbjörn Jónsson, chair of the National Festival Committee, noted that while there were initial rain showers, the weather improved significantly. They provided indoor venues for shelter, with the majority seeking refuge in Herjólfshöll, which was filled to capacity. The festival culminated last night with an ending performance and the traditional “brekkusöngur” (hill song), which was a great success, according to Jónas.
Karl Gauti Hjaltason, the police chief in the Westmann Islands, reported that the festival proceeded without major incidents, with fewer drug-related issues than in previous years. Some minor alcohol-related incidents and minor assaults were recorded, but no serious cases or sexual offenses had been reported thus far.
Meanwhile, the family festival “Ein með Öllu” took place in Akureyri, where organizer Davíð Rúnar Gunnarsson expressed great satisfaction following the closing concert, which ended with a spectacular fireworks display. After a well-received weekend filled with joy, the crowd has started to disperse.
At the youth gathering in Borgarnes, hosted by UMFÍ, around 5,000 attendees enjoyed the event despite a light drizzle. Omar Bragi Stefánsson, the executive director, observed that the rain had minimal impact on the activities, with only some parents seeking shelter.
Lastly, in Neskaupsstaður, the Neistaflug festival proceeded smoothly, although inclement weather necessitated relocating the large concert indoors. Organizers reported a significant turnout, counting over 300 cars outside the venue during the concert.
