During the Ólavsøka festival, progress was made in digitizing the Faroese public broadcasting archive.
Approximately half a million paper documents, around 13,000 video tapes, and about 30,000 audio tapes have been converted into digital format. Consequently, the SavnsGull project, initiated to preserve the broadcasting archive, has achieved its primary goal.
Former SavnsGull leader Mass Hoydal emphasizes that the next step is to ensure that the archive becomes accessible to all Faroese citizens. In a recent letter to the editor, he expressed disappointment that this work has not yet commenced. Hoydal views this accessibility as fundamental to national identity.
“It is crucial that we take our identity as Faroese seriously,” he stated. Hoydal is calling on the public broadcaster and authorities to initiate the process of making the archive available to the public.
A four-year plan outlining how to achieve this accessibility has already been created. Now, it is a matter of willingness to implement it, according to the former leader of SavnsGull.
