Discover Airlines, a holiday airline owned by Lufthansa Group, will operate scheduled flights between Frankfurt and Savonlinna next summer, while also opening a direct Frankfurt to Kajaani route for the coming winter season, Yle reports.

The airline will operate 11 return flights to Savonlinna during the summer. Flights will begin shortly before Midsummer and continue until late August, with one weekly overnight service between Saturday and Sunday. Each flight can carry 174 passengers.

The flight will leave Frankfurt at 9.30pm on Saturday and arrive in Savonlinna at 1.20am on Sunday. The return flight will depart Savonlinna at 3.20am on Sunday and arrive in Frankfurt at 5.10am.

According to a statement from tourism organisations in the Savonlinna region, the schedule is designed to allow travellers to reach the Saimaa region on the first day of their holiday.

Charter flights from Frankfurt previously operated to Savonlinna, but they ended in summer 2025 because of poor profitability. Tourism operators hope the new route will improve access to Savonlinna and the Saimaa region from Central Europe.

Germany is described as one of the most important international target markets for both the Kainuu region and the Savonlinna region. Finavia and Visit Finland are supporting the launch of the route through marketing. The direct international air connections are part of tourism projects in Savonlinna and eastern Finland, which are partly funded by the European Union and the Regional Council of South Savo.
