In the Faroe Islands, children and young people should not be allowed to purchase energy drinks, according to Steffan Klein Poulsen, a member of the Parliament from the Midflokkurin party. Poulsen advocates for an age restriction on the sale of energy drinks, proposing a minimum age of either 16 or 18 years.

The parliamentarian addressed his concerns in a ‘Question 52’ submission to the Minister of Health, Margit Stórá. In his inquiry, he asks whether the Minister plans to implement a ban on the sale of energy drinks to minors.

The conversation around regulating energy drink sales follows increasing health concerns regarding their consumption among younger populations. Proponents of the ban argue that age restrictions are vital to protect children’s health, citing potential negative effects associated with the high caffeine and sugar content found in these beverages.

As public debate continues, the government’s response to the proposed restrictions remains to be seen, but the discussion reflects a growing awareness of the health implications tied to energy drink consumption in the Faroe Islands and beyond.
