EU hopes all coastal states will comply with mackerel quotas next year

The European Commission believes the Faroe Islands, Norway, the UK, and Iceland have a duty to ensure mackerel fishing does not exceed sustainable limits, according to a statement to Norwegian fishing publication Fiskeribladet.

The Commission also hopes all coastal states will follow scientific advice for 2027 quotas. This year, the four nations jointly set a mackerel quota of 300,000 tonnes—174,000 tonnes above the recommended level. The Faroese share is 13.35%.

The Commission alleges Russia bears the greatest responsibility for overfishing.
