Court to rule on Jonas Falk cocaine trafficking case

A Swedish court will deliver its verdict on Tuesday in the case against Jonas Falk, who stands accused of four counts of aggravated drug trafficking involving 2.5 tonnes of cocaine.

Prosecutors allege Falk played a “decisive” role in smuggling tonnes of cocaine from South America to Europe between 2020 and 2021. The charges relate to offences said to have occurred abroad, including in Spain.

Much of the evidence consists of messages from the encrypted Sky ECC app, which was cracked by European police in spring 2021. Prosecutor Lars Lindman has previously stated he “absolutely believes in a conviction,” describing the chat logs as extensive and unambiguous.

Falk’s defence lawyer, Max Ahlgren, has criticised the decision to try the case in Sweden, arguing the country lacks jurisdiction. He states Falk has no connection to Sweden beyond citizenship, that no offences occurred in Sweden, and that other countries are better equipped to investigate.

“It is also expensive and results in an excessively long period of pre-trial detention for Jonas Falk,” Ahlgren said.

Falk, who denies the charges, has a history of both convictions and acquittals in Swedish courts. He was previously convicted in a lower court for his role in “Operation Playa,” one of Sweden’s largest drug cases, before being acquitted on appeal.

“Jonas Falk feels this is personal. If he weren’t Jonas Falk and hadn’t been acquitted in ‘Operation Playa,’ these charges would never have been brought,” Ahlgren said.

Prosecutor Lindman has said Falk is being tried in Sweden because he is a Swedish citizen, and that Spain showed no interest in taking over the cases now before the Swedish court.
