Puskaparking gains popularity as budget-friendly overnight option

Finland offers hundreds of free overnight parking spots known as puskaparks, where motorhome travelers can stop for a single night without using official campgrounds.

The practice is widespread but comes with unspoken rules: no setting up outside the vehicle, no grilling or tables outside, and all trash must be taken away. Emptying water tanks is also prohibited.

Leena Heinonen, a motorhome traveler from Rovaniemi, told Yle that puskaparks provide flexibility when arriving late or when campgrounds are full. She uses an app to locate suitable spots along her route.

In Vaasa, a seaside parking area near the former prison has become a popular puskapark this summer. Travelers heading to Sweden via ferry often stop there overnight. Jukka Pitkanen, traveling with his wife and dogs from Rovaniemi, said the location is convenient and scenic for a quick rest.

In Rovaniemi, motorhome owner Tomi Alanko prefers puskaparks for the freedom and cost savings. He acknowledged that while some locals may object, he has never faced complaints when staying in legal parking areas. Norwegian traveler Ivar Guttorm, passing through Rovaniemi, also chose a puskapark behind a hamburger restaurant when the official campground was full.

Jiri Kattelus, traffic expert at the Finnish Caravaning Federation, said puskaparks are widely used across Finland, including churchyards and rest areas. He stressed the difference between temporary parking and camping: leaving shoes outside may not be camping, but setting up tables or grills crosses the line.

In Jyväskylä, motorhome user Alpo Raitanen uses puskaparks selectively, avoiding spots that block small beaches or private property. He follows the rule of arriving late and leaving early, making puskaparks a practical alternative to campgrounds.

Kattelus noted regional differences in acceptance, depending on landowners, cities, and local policies. So far, few outright bans have been introduced because the practice has not caused major issues.
