One of the two people who died in Finland’s spring salmonella outbreak was receiving palliative care, Elina Leinonen, a special advisor at the Finnish Food Authority, told Yle on Thursday.
The National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) previously stated that the deaths may have been linked to other underlying illnesses. Ten people were hospitalised due to the infection.
THL declared the epidemic over this week. For otherwise healthy individuals, salmonella is generally not life-threatening.
The outbreak was traced to alfalfa sprout seeds contaminated in India and imported to Europe.
