FC Lahti’s Veikkausliiga match against HJK was briefly suspended on Saturday after flares were lit in the away supporters’ section, despite extensive security preparations.

The club’s security chief, Kimmo Härkönen, told Yle that organizers had planned safety measures since spring, including inspecting drains and seating across the stadium on Friday. All spectators underwent security checks, with fan groups subjected to a second screening before entering the stands. The HJK section was also cordoned off with an opaque fence.

Before the match, a group attacked FC Lahti supporters at a nearby bar with flares and violence. Police arrested 48 people, some from abroad, on suspicion of offenses including assault. No serious injuries were reported.

Härkönen called the pre-match brawl “pure hooliganism” and noted that foreign reinforcements for HJK fans had been anticipated. He added that the incidents will lead to even tighter security at future matches.

Both clubs condemned the violence. HJK stated in a social media post that those involved have no place at their home games and that the club will fully support authorities in holding them accountable. The Finnish Football Association’s disciplinary committee will later decide on consequences for the teams.

Police are investigating the use of flares during the match.
