Three young people killed in Iceland’s deadliest crash since 2018

Three young people died in a crash on the Krýsuvíkurvegur road near the Bláfjallavegur road overnight, making it Iceland’s deadliest road crash since December 2018, mbl.is reported.

Seven crashes in Iceland since 2001 have killed three or more people.

In 2001, three people died after two cars collided at the junction of the Hafravatnsvegur and Nesjavallavegur roads. Two women died in the crash, while a third person later died from their injuries in hospital.

Three such crashes occurred in 2002. In June, four people, including three adults and one child, died after a car entered Blöndulón lake and they drowned. The driver lost control on loose gravel on the Kjölur road, sending the car over a stone wall and into the lake.

That same year, three women died in a crash at the junction of the Suðurlandsvegur and Landvegur roads. They were in their seventies, eighties and nineties.

In October 2002, a woman and two children died after a car left the road in Skutulsfjörður.

In December 2009, three people died in a head-on collision on the Hafnarfjarðarvegur road near Arnarnesbrú, involving a taxi and a Suzuki. One of them died from their injuries several days after the crash.

In 2017, two adults and a child died after a car drove off a ferry pier at Árskógssandur and landed in the sea. A report by the Transportation Accident Investigation Board said the driver had probably lost consciousness while driving.

In December 2018, three tourists died after the driver of a sport utility vehicle left a bridge over the Núpsvötn river on Skeiðarársandur. The victims were two women in their thirties and an 11-month-old child.
