This summer’s bountiful blueberry harvest has significantly boosted online sales of the fruit. Blueberries are being sold so actively on various online platforms and social media that the largest local buy-and-sell group in Tampere, Finland, had to ban such sales posts. According to Juhani “Jussu” Sainio, an administrator of the group, the number of sales posts reached up to 50 per week. He noted that the decision received positive feedback as members were frustrated with their feeds being filled with blueberry sale announcements.

A similar trend has been observed in another popular Facebook group. Anukaisa Alanen, an admin for the Tampere group, stated that personal sales of foraged blueberries are still permitted. The group has even gained new members due to the sales activity.

Blueberries are selling on social media for about five euros per liter, which is significantly higher than the average purchase price of 0.91 euros per liter that berry companies are offering. Jyri Heikkilä from Lempäälä collects blueberries for private sales and reported success in selling them online. He feels that the prices he receives in private sales have been fair, although he acknowledges that there are times when he faces shortages in orders. Nevertheless, he has managed to find buyers.

Heikkilä appreciates the personal interactions that come with selling blueberries directly, offering him a chance to connect with people in his new community while providing them with a healthy product.
