The Danish Financial Supervisory Authority has issued multiple directives to Nets after an inspection uncovered IT governance failures that elevate operational risks, state broadcaster DR reports.
The watchdog identified deficiencies in the payment services provider’s IT risk management, contingency planning, and third-party risk controls. These shortcomings pose an increased IT risk, according to the authority.
The directives follow two major outages: one on 21 May this year and another in summer 2025. Both incidents exposed systemic and procedural weaknesses, the regulator said. The May outage lasted several hours, disrupting most card payments and particularly affecting Danes abroad. Nets attributed it to network errors disrupting platform connectivity.
The inspection ran from December 2025 to June 2026. It is not the first reprimand for Nets; in October 2025, the authority issued directives after a 19 July 2025 outage caused long queues at the Great Belt Bridge tolls, citing insufficient communication with the public and customers.
In a written statement to DR, Nets said it has implemented targeted improvements to strengthen resilience, processes, and organisation for critical incidents, including better communication with authorities, media, customers, and the public. The company added it will continue this work to address the new directives.
