A Copenhagen court has fined Dutch airline KLM 3 million kroner for a misleading radio advertisement about sustainability, Danish news agency Ritzau reports.
The ad, broadcast thousands of times on Spotify and several radio stations in 2023, stated: “Now we at KLM are taking a big step toward traveling a little more sustainably. Our tickets now include a portion of sustainable aviation fuel. If you want to fly more sustainably and accelerate development, you can choose to add more when booking your ticket.”
The Danish Consumer Ombudsman filed a police report against KLM in January, alleging the ad violated the Marketing Practices Act by implying greater climate and environmental benefits than the airline actually delivered.
The fine matches the prosecution’s demand. KLM had sought acquittal and has not yet indicated whether it will appeal the ruling.
