The Faroe Islands have unilaterally set high quotas for mackerel and herring, a move the EU Council says is unsustainable and undermines collective agreements among standard fishing nations, including those outside the EU such as the Faroes.
The EU Council, while welcoming the Faroes’ alignment with EU sanctions against Russia and their cooperation on energy and climate action, stressed that the islands must adopt a more constructive approach within the North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) to ensure sustainable and equitable fishing.
Recent years have seen growing cooperation between the EU and the Faroe Islands, the Council noted. It also praised the Faroes’ participation in the Erasmus development program.
