Accommodation prices in Tampere have skyrocketed during peak summer events due to dynamic pricing, with remaining rooms costing several times more than usual, Yle reports.

At the Marriott hotel in Tampere, for example, one of the few available rooms for a peak August weekend was listed at over €400, while the same room could be booked for under €100 in January. Sokos Hotels confirmed that room rates during event weekends can range from €175 to €350, depending on booking time and method.

Dynamic pricing adjusts rates in real time based on demand and supply, a practice long used in the airline industry. Mika Yrjölä, a researcher at Tampere University, warns that while this benefits businesses, it risks alienating customers if perceived as unfair.

“This is a kind of spontaneity tax,” Yrjölä said. “To save money, you must book travel and accommodation well in advance or be flexible with dates.”

Modern pricing algorithms track consumer behavior, including social media discussions and repeated searches, to anticipate demand spikes. Yrjölä noted that algorithms can detect when a user returns to a travel comparison site multiple times, increasing the likelihood of a purchase even if prices rise.

He added that while dynamic pricing is accepted when it offers clear benefits—such as apps selling discounted near-expiry food—unfair pricing can break customer trust and deter purchases entirely.
