30-year-old woman convicted of repeated unprovoked assaults
A 30-year-old Finnish woman, identified only as Tanja, has been convicted of more than ten assaults between 2022 and 2023, including attacks on at least four children, seven women, and one man, according to court documents obtained by Yle. She has also been convicted of attempted murder in a separate case.
Tanja’s first violent crime conviction came a decade ago, when she was 20. She was sentenced to four years in prison for attempting to kill a woman she knew by stabbing her in the neck. Since then, she has continued to assault strangers without provocation in public places, including shopping centres and streets in Helsinki and Vantaa.
In one incident in September 2021, Tanja struck a two-year-old child in the head with her fist in the Myyrmanni shopping centre in Vantaa. In another, she punched a woman in the face in Helsinki’s Narinkkatori after the woman refused to give her money. Police later found a knife in her possession.
Court records show Tanja has a history of substance abuse and mental health issues, including hospital treatment. Despite multiple convictions, she has continued to offend. In January 2021, she assaulted a shift supervisor at a Helsinki supermarket after being told to stop damaging property, receiving only a fine.
Experts interviewed by Yle, including Niuvanniemi Hospital’s chief physician Allan Seppänen and University of Helsinki adjunct professor Markus Kaakinen, note that repeated violence often stems from overlapping factors such as untreated mental health disorders, including personality disorders or psychosis. Such individuals may act violently without external triggers.
Yle’s investigation highlights how authorities have struggled to break the cycle of violence in Tanja’s case, despite her extensive criminal record.
