A district court in Lapland has sentenced a Rovaniemi man to eight months of unconditional imprisonment for making 550 unnecessary calls to emergency services over four years.

The man admitted during police questioning that he had made frivolous calls but claimed he did not remember all of them. Authorities had repeatedly warned him against calling the emergency number for non-urgent matters.

The court ruled that his actions had disrupted emergency radio communications and other telecommunications essential for life-saving operations. Given the high volume of calls and the prolonged period of the offences, the court imposed an eight-month prison sentence.

Under Finnish law, aggravated disruption of telecommunications carries a minimum sentence of four months and a maximum of five years. The man had a prior conditional sentence from a court of appeals, but the district court deemed him unsuitable for another conditional term due to the ongoing nature of his offences.

The court also ordered the confiscation of his mobile phone, the tool used in the crimes. The verdict is not yet final.
