Military service for individuals with diabetes to be considered in Finland
Military service for individuals with diabetes could be implemented by creating a new fitness classification, according to reports. This change would require separate selection events or health examinations to assess their suitability for service.
The report by a working group in the Finnish Defense Forces, which explored the possibility of allowing diabetics to serve, was completed in June. The Defense Command will determine new fitness classifications.
The return of diabetics to military service has been outlined in the government’s program. In 2018, the Defense Command had prohibited military service for those with diabetes, citing safety concerns.
The Ministry of Defense is set to officially address this issue by early autumn at the latest.
