Jyväskylä has stopped issuing temporary parking permits for residential streets where parking is prohibited, the city announced, citing a violation of traffic laws.
The permits, previously available for up to two days for events like family celebrations or maintenance work, were granted if emergency routes remained clear and no unreasonable disruption occurred. However, a review this spring found the practice conflicted with national traffic regulations, said Ilkka Toppila, the city’s traffic engineering officer.
“We cannot issue permits that allow breaking traffic laws,” Toppila stated. The city previously received 200–250 applications annually, mostly for family gatherings or short-term building maintenance.
Residents are now advised to direct visitors to public parking areas, permitted street sections, or temporary arrangements with neighbors. The change took effect at the start of June and has been communicated on the city’s website.
