A fire on the eve of Midsummer completely destroyed a wooden house in the Kalliomäki area of Forssa, a culturally and historically significant district, Yle reports.
The local fire department prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings in the densely constructed area. Fire chief Mikko Tiensuu said the operation was challenging due to the risk of the fire reaching adjacent log houses.
The area contains nationally valuable protected buildings dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Authorities have not confirmed whether the destroyed building was protected or its historical significance.
Crews worked for over eight hours to extinguish the fire, which was reported just before 8:30 pm on Friday. The building was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
