Midwives and nurses can order pregnancy care tests under their own names

Midwives and nurses providing pregnancy care can now order tests using their own names and professional licence numbers, mbl.is reported. Until now, electronic system limitations meant requests had to be registered under a doctor’s name.

The results were then sent to the doctors named on the requests, rather than to the midwives and nurses responsible for following up. The health ministry says registering requests under the professional who orders the test and oversees its follow-up is intended to simplify procedures, shorten communication lines and improve safety for pregnant women.

The change applies to tests ordered and followed up by midwives and nurses under current professional guidelines for pregnancy care. They will continue to consult doctors on interpreting results and treatment when needed.

The change follows recommendations made by a health ministry working group in November 2024. It does not mean more tests will be carried out as part of routine pregnancy care, or alter who pays for them. Health institutions will continue to cover the cost of tests ordered through them.
