The Danish government has announced a substantial multi-million-kroner rescue package to prevent the closure of rural bus routes amid soaring fuel prices, national broadcaster DR reports.
Transport Minister Signe Munk (SF) confirmed the funding, described as a “three-digit million” amount, will be allocated to support public transport operators. The exact figure remains undisclosed as negotiations with regional transport agencies continue.
“We want to help Danes who rely on local buses,” Munk said, adding that the funds will be reallocated from existing budgets, including unused 2026 state funds and a planned green domestic route project.
Tim Vermund Andersen, chair of Denmark’s transport agencies and a Social Democrat councillor in Odense, welcomed the move, stating that without intervention, operators would have faced route closures, fare hikes, or service reductions. FynBus, which he oversees, was particularly vulnerable as it prepares to replace nearly its entire fleet in 2027.
Thomas Øster, CEO of North Jutland’s transport agency, and Preben Friis Hauge, chair of Sydtrafik, also praised the decision, emphasizing the critical role of rural bus services in regional connectivity.
