A 60 megawatt data centre is planned for Finby in Närpiö, according to a Yle report.
The project is being developed by Aurinkokarhu, a Korsholm-based company that has signed a preliminary land purchase agreement for 18 hectares with private landowners, part of which is owned by the town of Närpiö.
On Thursday, Aurinkokarhu announced it had also signed a letter of intent with Närpiö Kaukolämpö to supply waste heat from the data centre to the district heating network. Under the agreement, the heating company could purchase the waste heat at cost price.
Aurinkokarhu estimates the construction will employ around 100 people, with 20–40 permanent jobs once operational. The data centre will be built adjacent to Närpiö Kaukolämpö’s facilities.
Markus Böling, CEO of Närpiö Kaukolämpö, said the waste heat from the data centre would represent a significant share of the district heating production.
The Ostrobothnia region is seeing broader data centre development, with Isojoki municipality signing a letter of intent in December 2025 for an 80 MW facility, while Kristinestad has reserved 270 hectares for a potential data centre in a preliminary agreement with a Norwegian-British operator.
