The former rector of the University of Oulu, Arto Maaninen, resigned this week following allegations of sexual harassment, according to a report by Helsingin Sanomat cited by Yle.

An investigation commissioned by the university found that Maaninen made lewd remarks to a subordinate and proposed a sexual act during a work-related trip. The misconduct was reported by another employee, not the person targeted.

The university announced on Tuesday that Maaninen was stepping down, attributing his departure to alcohol use and inappropriate behavior at a staff event. The university board had been considering whether he retained the trust needed to continue in the role before he chose to resign.

In a LinkedIn post, Maaninen apologized for his behavior, acknowledging that his judgment had failed. He accepted responsibility and stated that he agreed with the university board that a rector represents not just himself but the entire institution.

Maaninen had served as rector since early 2025, having previously been the university’s vice rector for partnerships.
