Norway Cup implements new refereeing rule limiting communication to team captains

Starting this year, only team captains are allowed to communicate with referees during matches at the Norway Cup, a rule set to be adopted in top-flight football from August 1. This guideline aims to reduce unnecessary remarks to referees and create a more respectful environment on the pitch, particularly benefiting young and inexperienced referees. Captains are taking on increased responsibility, and many have reacted positively to this change. Referees have reported favorable outcomes from the new guidelines.

The initiative follows a similar decision by UEFA before the European Championship, where only captains were permitted to talk to referees. Norway Cup officials observed immediate benefits from this approach, prompting its wider implementation across various leagues in Norway, including the Eliteserien and Toppserien.

Tomas Trogstad, the referee chief at Norway Cup, emphasized the importance of ensuring a supportive atmosphere for the younger referees, stating that preserving their experience on the field is crucial.

Molde’s G15 team captain, Leo Tangen Fosseide, welcomed the change, expressing that it protects referees and minimizes disputes during matches. He acknowledged the added responsibility he feels as a captain.

Lars Johan Hammer, a referee at Norway Cup for nearly three decades, noted a significant decline in players surrounding referees since the new rule’s implementation, describing its impact as large and efficient. He observed that teams are now more aware of their responsibilities, leading to a more organized game.

Ahead of its introduction in elite football, Terje Hauge, the refereeing chief of the Norwegian Football Federation, remarked that this adjustment would foster improved communication and understanding between referees and captains.
