A collection of 13 buildings by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto is poised to join UNESCO’s world heritage list after receiving a key endorsement from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.
ICOMOS, the advisory body to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, has recommended the Aalto Works nomination for inscription, concluding that the sites meet the criteria for world heritage status. The final decision will be made in July during the committee’s session in South Korea.
Stefan Wessman, a specialist at Finland’s National Board of Antiquities, called the recommendation a major milestone. “ICOMOS has recognised the value of Aalto’s architecture in the same way our national experts have, giving full support to the proposal,” he said in a statement.
The 13 sites include landmarks such as the Seinäjoki Aalto Centre, part of a broader push to secure international recognition for Finland’s modernist architectural legacy.
