Finnish birdwatchers invited to track nest boxes in nationwide survey
The Finnish nature organisation BirdLife Suomi has launched its annual Pönttöbongaus event, calling on the public to observe and report nest box activity across the country this weekend.
Participants are asked to monitor nest boxes used by birds and submit their findings to BirdLife Finland, which uses the data to study breeding patterns and population trends. The organisation emphasised that the event is not a competition but an opportunity for citizens to engage with local birdlife.
First held in 2013, the survey has grown each year, with last year’s edition recording over 49,000 nest boxes from more than 6,100 locations—a new high for the initiative.
