Danish public broadcaster DR asked six well-known Danes to name what they value most about their country, with answers ranging from cultural traditions to everyday freedoms.

Footballer Pierre-Emile Højbjerg highlighted the Danish concept of hygge—the cozy, contented atmosphere that defines much of daily life. “It’s the small things, like lighting candles in winter or sharing a meal with friends,” he said.

National team captain Pernille Harder pointed to gender equality, calling it “something we sometimes take for granted, but it’s a privilege to live in a country where women’s rights and opportunities are so deeply rooted.”

Musician Peter A.G. chose Denmark’s strong welfare system, emphasizing access to healthcare and education. “No one should have to worry about getting sick or affording school,” he said.

Influencer Sofie1998 praised the country’s work-life balance, noting that “Danes prioritize family and free time in a way that’s rare elsewhere.”

Satire duo Platt-Form selected Danish humor, describing it as “dry, self-deprecating, and unapologetically honest—it keeps us grounded.”

Author Glenn Bech focused on freedom of speech, calling it “the backbone of our democracy” and a value that “should never be compromised.”

The responses were gathered ahead of Grundlovsdag (Constitution Day), Denmark’s annual celebration of its democratic foundations.
