Finland’s defence forces have established a large new logistics depot in Kemi, repurposing a former paper mill to store combat equipment, medical supplies, and potentially weapons and vehicles, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The 25,000-square-metre facility, operated by the Defence Forces’ Logistics Regiment, strengthens northern Finland’s military infrastructure, according to officials. Kemi’s mayor, Matti Ruotsalainen, called the depot a “very welcome and strong addition” to the region, citing its deep-water port and strategic location on the Bothnian Bay.

Defence forces logistics chief Jari Mikkonen emphasised Kemi’s logistical advantages, including proximity to Ajos port (6 km away), Kemi-Tornio Airport (14 km), and the Swedish border near Haparanda (34 km). A dedicated railway line also serves the site. Mikkonen noted that expanding western-gauge rail access northward would further enhance cross-border operations, calling it a “strategic-level decision.”

The depot marks the defence forces’ first new regional unit since the 1970s. Ruotsalainen said the facility could attract international troops via Ajos port and spur local service development, though specific needs remain unclear. “We aim to provide all possible support,” he stated.
