A Serbian artist is creating a large-scale public mural on the end wall of a building in Varðabyrgi, a district of Tórshavn, as part of an ongoing project to bring free, accessible art to the Faroe Islands, Faroese broadcaster KVF reports.
Andrej Zikic, known professionally as ARTEZ, is painting the work as his first contribution to We Need Art, a 2026 initiative promoting public art in the islands. The mural belongs to his Simple Acrobatics series, which uses the human body as a structural element in compositions. This piece depicts two female figures in a striking, balanced pose—one Zikic describes as “not at all difficult” to replicate.
The wall’s owner, Tórur Johannessen, agreed to host the artwork after reviewing Zikic’s designs. “We decided to offer the wall once we saw how the painting would look,” he said.
Zikic typically works with real models, often friends or collaborators. For this mural, he photographed two female dancers from Serbia—Maja and Tamara—who posed as references for the figures. “I try to use people I know, or people whose work I admire,” he explained.
The project follows earlier public art efforts in the Faroes, where murals have been commissioned to revitalise urban spaces in Tórshavn and nearby Argir.
