School safety committees in the Faroe Islands are largely ineffective because members receive little to no compensation for their work, according to a report by public broadcaster KVF citing data from the Education Directorate.
The committees, which include representatives from school leadership and teachers, are tasked with overseeing workplace environment issues, including psychological working conditions. However, Jacob Eli S. Olsen, chair of the Teachers’ Association, said funding shortages have hindered their function.
“Hopefully, more will be allocated for meeting fees for committee members in the coming years,” Olsen said during the association’s general assembly, as reported by Skúlablaðið. He added that the union would monitor workplace assessments and provide input on improvements.
