arrest, Finland, treason

Finnish police have detained Mikko Vapa, one of the so-called “tunnel brothers,” following a months-long manhunt, public broadcaster Yle reports. Vapa, wanted for alleged treason, had evaded a Helsinki district court trial since January 2026.

Authorities apprehended Vapa in Iisalmi, where he reportedly resisted arrest and attempted to flee. Police have filed a separate charge of violent resistance against an officer during the operation. The Eastern Finland Police Department is investigating the incident.

Vapa’s brother, Marko Vapa—also charged with treason—was arrested earlier. Prosecutors allege the pair collected and published online sensitive details about Finnish defense and security infrastructure.

Vapa has been transferred to custody ahead of his court proceedings.
