The Finnish government will fund at least 500 short-term positions in state agencies for young jobseekers this year, following a budget decision made during spring fiscal negotiations, Yle reports.
The roles are intended for 18- to 25-year-olds seeking their first state employment, with each contract limited to three months. A survey of 109 government employers in May revealed demand for 733 such positions—exceeding expectations, according to Juha Madetoja, financial counsellor at the Ministry of Finance.
“This positively surprised us,” Madetoja said. The ministry capped the total at 500 positions, allocating €4 million for the initiative.
Recruitment is now underway, with some openings expected as early as this summer and the remainder by autumn. Existing applicants for internships or trainee roles may also fill some posts. Positions will be distributed nationwide, Madetoja noted, emphasizing opportunities beyond the Helsinki region.
“The tasks are often rewarding,” he added, “and internships support both employment and studies.”
