Finland, traffic violations, youth safety

Finnish police recorded 902 traffic violations by moped riders during a three-week targeted enforcement campaign in May focused on young road users, state broadcaster Yle reports.

The operation also found 426 electric scooter riders breaking rules, including riding on sidewalks and carrying passengers. Another 73 drivers were caught operating vehicles while intoxicated.

Cyclists received 288 fines, primarily for riding on sidewalks, while 55 motorists were penalised for failing to yield at pedestrian crossings. Among moped riders, 14 were charged with drunk driving and 137 with operating without proper licences.

Four 17-year-olds were caught violating a new law prohibiting driving between midnight and 5 a.m., resulting in fines and temporary driving bans.

“These results are concerning and indicate significant failures in compliance with traffic regulations,” said police inspector Heikki Kallio in a statement.
