Joensuu will launch a two-year pilot program integrating structured arts training into the school day for upper secondary students, public broadcaster Yle reports. The model mirrors the city’s existing sports academy, where practice sessions are built into timetables.

The arts academy would allow students in grades 7–9 to pursue focused training in music, visual arts, circus skills, or crafts during designated school hours. Sixth graders interested in the program will be surveyed next academic year, with selected participants placed in classes where schedules accommodate arts practice.

The initiative, proposed by city councilor Tiia-Mari Mäkinen, has drawn cross-party support and interest from other municipalities. “This would enable goal-oriented arts training through schools,” Mäkinen said. The program will be developed in partnership with Joensuu Conservatory and the adult education center, which provide foundational arts instruction.

A separate proposal for arts-focused break activities in schools is contingent on securing grant funding. The city council will vote on the pilot in June.
