Four large-scale roadworks projects on Amager are causing severe congestion, with drivers reporting travel times of 45 minutes to cover just 300 metres during peak afternoon hours, according to Danish broadcaster DR.

The most disruptive closures include a narrowed H.C. Andersens Boulevard near Langebro, where lane restrictions will remain until 12 June 2026. The bottleneck has led to kilometre-long queues toward Rådhuspladsen.

A full closure of Artillerivej—a key route across Amager—between Kardinalgangen and Ved Slusen was originally set to last until 6 August 2026, but after widespread traffic chaos, state-owned energy firm Energinet accelerated the timeline. The road is now expected to reopen by late June 2026 as crews install a new power cable to reinforce Copenhagen’s grid.

On Vejlands Allé, another critical artery, Energinet’s cable work has reduced traffic to a single lane in each direction between Artillerivej and Center Boulevard. Restrictions there will continue until 9 September 2026, with further disruptions planned later for Amagerbrogade and Holmbladsgade.

The longest-term project is the expansion of the Øresund Motorway, which will add an extra lane in each direction. Speed limits are reduced to 80 km/h, and lanes are narrowed due to mid-barrier construction until late 2026, though the full project won’t conclude until end-2029.

Copenhagen Municipality’s traffic map currently lists over 200 active roadworks on Amager, though most have minimal impact. Timelines remain subject to change, with updates available via the Danish Road Directorate’s website.
