Oulu’s city board has approved a sweeping service network review that would close over ten schools and daycare centres by 2034, aiming to slash €18 million from the municipal budget by 2028, Yle reports.
The proposal, which also includes closures of libraries and changes to youth facilities, sports venues, museums, and adult education centres, will go before the city council for a final decision on 8 June. The cuts are based on demographic shifts, building conditions, and service usage rates.
Opposition from the Finns Party and Left Alliance failed to alter the plan. Councillor Jani Törmi (Finns Party) submitted 19 amendments, all rejected, while Left Alliance members Mikko Raudaskoski and Ammi Ruotsalainen opposed converting Raati swimming hall into an indoor sports facility—a move approved 10–3.
City board chair Jarmo J. Husso called the decision “necessary and carefully prepared,” expressing confidence in council approval next week.
