Faroese customs authorities have confiscated unprecedented quantities of narcotics in recent operations, with at least five kilograms of cocaine smuggled into the islands in the largest case to date, the national broadcaster KVF reports.
Eyðun Mørkøre, director of the Faroese Tax and Customs Service (TAKS), confirmed the seizures and warned that the Faroe Islands have become an increasingly attractive target for foreign smugglers. The cocaine, primarily imported in bulk, is later distributed across the archipelago.
Despite the record hauls, Mørkøre acknowledged significant gaps in enforcement, citing the need for improved conditions and additional personnel to strengthen border controls. He emphasized that while seizures have risen, the scale of attempted smuggling remains far higher.
The surge in drug trafficking follows growing international interest in the Faroese narcotics market, according to TAKS monitoring of cross-border activity.
