Finnish ice hockey team wins world championship gold

Finland’s men’s national ice hockey team secured the gold medal at the 2026 IIHF World Championship after defeating Sweden 4–1 in the final, Yle reports.
The victory marks Finland’s fourth world title, following previous wins in 1995, 2011, and 2019. Forward Sakari Manninen scored twice in the final, while defenseman Miro Heiskanen and forward Joel Armia each added a goal.
Head coach Jukka Jalonen called the win a “team effort,” praising the players’ discipline and resilience throughout the tournament. The championship game was played in Tampere, Finland, with a sell-out crowd of 13,455 at Nokia Arena.
Finland advanced to the final after defeating the United States 3–2 in overtime in the semifinal. Sweden had earlier edged out Canada 2–1 in their semifinal matchup.
