Finnish ice hockey supporters gathered in Helsinki’s Market Square on Sunday ahead of the national team’s world championship final against Switzerland, with expectations running high for a victory that could spark public celebrations, Yle reports.

The iconic Havis Amanda statue, a traditional focal point for post-victory revelry, has once again been enclosed by protective fencing to deter fans from climbing it—though some supporters say barriers won’t stop them if Finland wins.

“I’ll climb up there if we take the title,” declared Oliver Leino, a fan who praised the team’s performance under head coach Antti Pennanen. “With Mikael Granlund playing, this is going to be incredible.”

Others were more cautious. Lauri Sorto said he would avoid making public climbing pledges but added, “We’re all hoping the boys bring it home.”

Claudia Lumemaa and Minnona Rancken, watching the final from a nearby pub, called the statue’s protection a sensible move. “The fences do their job,” Lumemaa said.

Jere Kosonen and Antti Suokas, also following the match, said nerves would likely peak during play. “We’re here to watch and hope for the best,” Suokas said.

Finland’s last world championship win in 2022 saw thousands flood Helsinki’s streets, with some scaling the statue despite police barriers. Authorities have reinforced security this year in anticipation of similar scenes if the team prevails.

Yle will broadcast the final live from 21:20 local time.
